There are currently a vast selection of yoga classes available offering many different
styles of yoga. I have always felt that the essence of yoga lies within a non-religious
but deeply spiritual tradition. The current trend in Western countries of placing
a huge emphasis upon the physical body seems to me to be unbalanced. The physical
part of yoga (asana), if practiced regularly, will increase strength and flexibility
and may begin to change the way we feel about ourselves and our lives. However, there
are many other layers of yoga practice which include Pranayama (control of the breath
and vital forces), Pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses), Dharana (concentration)
and Dhyana (meditation). All of these practices are set within a clear context of
ethical living (yamas and niyamas).
My classes are a blend of these elements.
I trained as a teacher with the British Wheel of Yoga thirteen years ago and have
taken further specialised courses in Pranayama, Yoga Nidra (yogic sleep) and Japa
(chanting). I have taught yoga in schools, for Sure Start, at the New Vic Theatre,
in residential retirement homes, for Fit Farms camps for women and Tesco Diets .
I teach in-service training days for the British Wheel of Yoga and run day seminars
and weekend retreats. I am a Teaching Practice Observer for the British Wheel of
Yoga.
